AlUla
AlUla is the location most European productions have already seen in reference and want to shoot. It is also the most film-ready county in the Kingdom, with its own commission, crew base and infrastructure.
Terrain
- Golden and rust-red sandstone outcrops rising abruptly from flat valley floor — enormous scale with clean sightlines.
- Hegra: Nabataean rock-cut tomb façades, Saudi Arabia's first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Narrow slot canyons with hard directional light for a very short window each day.
- Jabal AlFil (Elephant Rock) and comparable freestanding monoliths that read as production design rather than geology.
- Sharaan Nature Reserve — open desert valley with mountain backdrop and controlled access.
- AlUla Old Town — abandoned mud-brick settlement, and dense date palm oasis with irrigation channels.
Access & permits
- AlUla has a dedicated regional film commission, which makes permitting materially more predictable than elsewhere in the country.
- Purpose-built studio and backlot facilities exist locally, along with a resident crew pool — useful for topping up rather than flying everyone in.
- Hegra and other heritage sites are tightly controlled: fixed footprint, no anchoring into rock, supervised access and strict wrap times. Plan these as the least flexible days in your schedule.
- AlUla International Airport (ULH) takes domestic flights; most international equipment still clears through Riyadh or Jeddah and moves overland.
- Overland from Riyadh is a long day. Most units fly crew and move trucks separately, staging the day before.
