Asir Mountains
Asir breaks the assumption. Juniper forest, hanging cloud, stone villages and cool air — in the south-west of the same country that holds the Empty Quarter.
Terrain
- The Sarawat range, with Abha sitting at roughly 2,200m and peaks rising higher.
- Juniper forest on the upper slopes, and real cloud that rolls through the valleys in the afternoon.
- Steep agricultural terracing cut into mountainsides over centuries.
- Rijal Almaa — a heritage village of tall stone-and-quartz houses, sharply geometric and unlike anything else in the region.
- Escarpment edges dropping thousands of metres toward the Tihama coastal plain, with genuine aerial-scale vistas.
- Traditional architecture with painted interiors (Al-Qatt Al-Asiri) — strong, saturated geometric pattern.
Access & permits
- Abha International Airport (AHB) serves the region with domestic connections.
- Mountain roads are steep, narrow and switchbacked. Large production trucks are restricted on some routes — check vehicle dimensions against the route before committing to a location.
- Cloud and fog are frequent and can close a location for hours. This is the one region in the Kingdom where you should schedule weather cover for lack of visibility rather than heat.
- Heritage villages have their own access conditions and community sensitivities. Local liaison matters more here than anywhere else in the country.
- Altitude affects equipment and crew mildly, and drone performance noticeably.
